EMOA MEB's, Now in Colour! http://revident.net/projects/emoa-68/meb-v1-w-cases-in-colour.jpg So, the last to arrive due to a shipping malfunction, my MEBs arrived today. This evening I spent some time with the Laser Cutter at Hacklab.to to cut out Joem's cases design. I didn't get in on the initial batch of cards due to constraints in time, budget and skills. Now that the peripherals are confirmed I'm looking forward to standing on the shoulder of giants. Great projects lay ahead. -- Scott Sullivan

Just a little something I cooked up ;) no pictures yet, but here's a wall of text about it... I've got hand drawn schematics made up for an EOMA-68... er... I'm calling it a Carrier Board for now (the PCB that the CPU card goes into). This one uses only through-hole components, and all but two (the PCMCIA slot and, oddly enough, the Ethernet jack) are very cheap. The idea is that someone like me who is rather a bit of a dunce with the soldering iron can still put it together in a dedicated weekend, if so inclined. *That is, a person with fairly beginner-level hobby skills can buy a fistful of parts and a CPU Card, etch a PCB (or get one from somewhere) and after a few hours of lead fume inhalation, has a complete computer in their hands.* That's a huge gift, I think, to the Maker community, not to mention the technically-inclined poor folk out there (I *know* I'm not the only one!)... seriously, it sounds like good stuff to me. My two rules for designing were (1) no surface mount anything at all period end-of-story, and (2) use as many very standard parts as possible. Every component can be had at Mouser Electronics in single unit quantities. The Ethernet jack has the magnetics built in, so it's (unfortunately) the most expensive part on the board -- but I couldn't find a through-hole Ethernet transformer... I've probably also omitted some necessary things out of simple ignorance (I have a hunch that there's more to the USB connection than four wires, a power supply and data feed, and the connector itself, for instance). I'm more budding hobbyist with this stuff than anything else -- but hey, you gotta start somewhere, right? ;) The only thing I don't like is that it still requires a custom PCB unless one wants to do some very creative dongle-making... probably doable but it'll be very ugly in a number of ways. That said, I'll be quite surprised if this design cannot get away with using a single-sided PCB -- meaning any shmuck who can get to eBay can order the supplies to make the board at home if they want to. (Sounds a little like me!) If anyone wants to try reading my horrible chicken scratch I'll send out a link to a scanned copy, otherwise I'll try and work up the motivation to move it into my graphics software (CorelDRAW X3), since, although I have a copy of Kicad, I never really bothered to learn how to use it properly... Any interest at all?

A point of confusion re: EOMA-68

Hello all! I just wanted to try and understand something with EOMA-68 -- just a small question that's not explained well on the Wiki page. I had a design idea that I wanted to draw up (not much of the actual circuitry -- I'm not that good -- but enough so that some electronics engineers can "fill in the blanks", if you will, with the circuitry I can't figure out), but I've got to get this figured out first. So I can sort of figure out that external to the CPU Card, there needs to be an I2C EEPROM. What I can't quite figure out is the purpose of that EEPROM. I'm *guessing* that it's for IDing what the external interfaces are on the host board / carrier board (the PCB that the CPU Card plugs into) so that the CPU card can turn off what's not needed, and provide proper I/O protocols to what is needed -- but that's only a guess, because it's extremely unclear on the Wiki page. Would you folks be able to provide some clarification? Thanks! Christopher

http://rhombus-tech.net/community_ideas/kde_tablet/news/ ok so whilst adam greig was successful because he used a camera sensor that could be brought down to a 6mhz clock rate, the $3 part we've sourced won't go below 12mhz. so, we have to upgrade to an STM32F207VCT6, which has DCMI (camera sensor) support built-in, amazingly. so, this *almost* concludes the set of hardware testing for the flying squirrel. l.

Kicad also got installed and it is reasonably usable. So use that to design your next EOMA application PCBs :) Also installed were xfce4, lxde and openbox window managers. Gambas installed from sources. The sound works through jack socket (hdmi sound - nothing as yet although it is known to work through booting up Android), and espeak works. So you could send it commands through serial port for example software, let gambas serial port program read the text and then the machine can be made talk back by gambas calling espeak. : I used it for the embedded work - instead of reading reams of logs, it puts important data out as text embedded inside <s>..things to say...</s> brackets and I filter for that with a gambas program and get the most relevant points read back out. NICE!!! When you first log in, a 3D animation runs if its all working.

flying squirrel weirdness on the I2C bus

ahh.... something really weird going on with the flying squirrel i2c addressing. i'm running i2cdetect and it's showing up 0x34 for the AXP209 I2C address instead of 0x68, and so on. i _thought_ i got the address for the I2C EEPROM right, from the datasheet (0xA2) - but it seems that it's been shifted by one bit (0x51) as well. help! i have no idea what's going on here! l.

Hi, I was wondering if you'd heard about Bruno's open GPU that's about to go kickstarter, and what you think of it. They want to open the IP from Number Nine, in FPGA form. It has both 2d and fixed-function GL parts, separable from each other if only 2d is needed. Chinese SoC vendor striving for world domination? Show your GPL loyalty page or get out of business!

Hello, I don't know if other folks noticed that already, but by now almost all Chinese ARM SoC vendors (targetting mass consumer market) put up some kind of "GPL/FOSS loyalty" page - and sources. I specifically call that "GPL loyalty" because as we know, there's some road ahead (maybe long) before it's "GPL compliance". Good news that some go beyond just GPL and provide Android sources, etc. It's yet to be seen how actually that useful technically as of now, but the talk about the outlook change. I'm sure that some of the vendors below did that because others did it. So, it looks like it gets self-sustaining, as put in subj: people come to you, and in quick chit-chat ask where's you GPL page, and if you say "nowhere", you get that strange look and people move to other booths, because Allwinner, Rockchip and everyone has it, and if you don't get that simple license thing, how you can actually hack on kernel and produce value? well.... uh... it looks like i totally cocked up the ADC side of the flying squirrel circuit for the microphone! i must have been on drugs or something (someone slipped something into my hot water with a bit of milk). the connections i made to the LM13700 OTA bear absolutely no relation to the example schematics! luckily i did manage to connect +ve and -ve to the right pins, meaning that the 3 LM13700s i now have are absolutely fine, so i've spent the day putting resistors on one of them like a porcupine, experimenting. what's really awesome about the LM13700 is that it has a fascinating history of its own: http://www.idea2ic.com/LM13600/LM13700.html being an independent-buffered dual-version of an incredibly famous OTA - the CA3080 - which was first sold in *1969* http://www.till.com/blog/archives/2005/06/last_of_the_ota.html i'm reminded of when i put the flying squirrel schematics in front of a chinese ODM for them to quote helping get it made, they said "that's a really old school design". i had no idea :) anyway, i'm presently flipping quills on an LM13700 porcupine and also i'll errr... this time be actually... like... connecting the ADC VREF pins on the STM32F so that... y'know... the ADC actually works? honestly... :) l.

The EOMA now functions like a powerful arm-netbook desktop computer and as powerful as any netbooks that first came out. Probably under $50 BOM costs for a netbook like ARM PC box with say an upgradeable 16GB sata SSD built into the box. This release has Gambas3 compiled and working. Gambas allows rapid GUI application development. So - now very easy to customize EOMA to become IoT gadget with a GUI user interface, a web interface or both.
