ok so thank you to wim for prompting me about FOSDEM 2018, i've applied for a stand there and also put in 3 talks in the "hardware track". now, here's the thing: taking 50kg of equipment to Shenzhen Maker Faire was... well... it wasn't fun. the actual faire, fine, but decanting that much equipment FORTY TIMES on international plane flights, taxis, buses, trains and walking around 3km in total, definitely wasn't. so a heads-up: this time i'll be bringing around 30kg on a 10,000km *international* overnight flight: if i'm going to FOSDEM 2018 i will definitely, definitely need some assistance getting to and from brussels airport to the hostel, and from there to the university. also, if anyone is already attending or is planning to attend, i'll need help covering the stand. last time another person named wim helped out, which was amazing of him, he just happened to be the person at the stand next door :) _also_.... what would really make it worth-while would be, if anyone's interested, to do a BoF: discuss and plan what needs to be done and so on. any thoughts and assistance appreciated. l.

pocketchip's keyboard for pc card?

https://getchip.com/pages/pocketchip I have been told, the pocketchip's keyboard is i2c. Can you connect the keyboard to the pcmcia/eoma68 breakout board? Then configure the keyboard's keys using a piece of software? I asked the chip company if they would sell a version of the pocketchip having an usb keyboard and no display. A version like that would be useful for people, should they want to combine a pocketchip with a raspberry pi, pc card or other computer. The chip company has not answered. Thanks.

Working on the high-frequency taper, a couple things have been bothering me--the two ground vias circled in the attached picture. Are they either optional or moveable? If so, even moving them East or Northeast takes some pressure off the taper. If not, we'll work around them but it is a little more complicated. Richard

https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/ thoughts? feeling distrust with past intel foo far... they call them shelf an manufacturer yet it also sounds like they hire a company to actually make/design the phone (?). hence its not open hardware as they don’t own the designs. imx6 SOC so i faster then neo900 i think? (got the learn about the web of TI SOCs and familys) neo900/gta0* i think do a bit more, like modem antenna hard disconnect as well has mosfet disconnect of power to modem. wifi/bt looks like it will have non-free firmware. Is it really not possible for them to use atk free firmware wifi IC? i guess/hope at least it will have free gps firmware :) unlike every other mainstream smartphone. like that doing the VOIP for calls and the seamless connection to a mobile phone number. something ive been thinking about for my self :) but there service sounds easier :).

Communication improvements (Update Oct 10th)

Hi Luke, In your update from October 10th you asked the questions: "How could communication and access to information about this project be improved?" My reply is quite late because I have been on vacation. I think you should not take the opinion of an individual person too seriously, altough I know this is easier said than done. The overall communication of this project is in my opinion very good and incredibly detailed but only if you are willing to invest your time and _read_. I think what we need quite urgent is a doable shipping date somewhere in 2018 and a roadmap. For example: Will the computer cards ship when they are ready, even if the printed Laptop parts are not? My current poor estimate is a shipping date somewhere in the second quarter of 2018 if all goes well. On the Crowdsupply page there is still the misleading claim that orders placed now will ship Nov. 15th 2017. I have seen such claims backfire in other crowdfunded projects and recommend to change it immediately. kind regards Pablo

Sorry to bring that topic up again, But I think you may have interest in this gnu/linux distro for that reason. Also, it is free software if you don't load the non-free repository. The bad? If you do load the module it isn't free software. It does however use runit by default. Also, it is rolling release like parabola and it is an independent distro. pity there isn't a free software fork but still, I think you could rake in more money by making a card for it in the future. If you can figure out how to install it that is... ;P xD only kidding... you have way, way, way more experience with gnu/linux then me.

DIY laptop part 2: camera

Hello, I wanted to add a camera onto my laptop. I located two suppliers: blisscomputers.net e-consystems.com My problem is a lack of experience. I know how many MP and where the camera should start focusing at (focal length at 30CM). I don't know how long a reasonable MIPI-CSI cable can be and I found out from one of the people that a length of 50CM (my original plan). Was too long so now I have to devise a solution... My other problem is that I don't know what the f-number aught to be. My original idea for using the camera is this: lid | Lens Camera | lid | screen screen screen ~~~~~~ screen screen screen Hinge-casing-casing~~~~~~casing Then I would simple flip the camera over the top and then I could have it face me and do video conferencing or whatever. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks, David

Hack GPD Pocket Into EOMA68 Computer?

Looking at the tear down: https://www.reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comments/6j1jfo/gpd_pocket_full_teardown… I can’t help myself from wondering how hard would it be to mod it into a eoma68 handheld computer? not many port holes to line upto. lcd ? lvds? i guess the inner base is mostly flat. to make a mod easier i was thinking one could use the lipo cell space for pcb instead and have a replacement back panel or 3d printed case width extender which the base lid goes on top of? kinda like this case extension for the openmoko phones [1]. To make extra room for new typical lipo or standard 18650 cells battery and some extra goodies :). Like usb ports for more storage, gps, mob modem, usb audio DAC choice or just a really big usb hub for Do What Ya Want? Maybe 3dprinted case extension or replacement back panel even would help with getting better wifi reception? put the anteriors in the plastic edging? And no I don't consider as a solution running old x200 with coreboot or libreboot as this approach is not really practical for the day-day user. Standardized Battery Pack Sizes?

One of the things ive been doing lately is diy battery boxes to power my gear (sound systems and lights). I see there’s a lack of cheap standard dimensioned battery packs. theres only popular proprietary ones. Sony camera/lighting li-ion 2S packs or drill packs, RC lipo packs but not in a hard case. this all end up being quite expensive compared to raw li-ion cells + BMS. With gadgets there seams to also be a problem. handheld computers like prya,zipit,eoma68 laptop[1],gpd pocket,etc use custom lipo cells which are very difficult to get replacements of because there not common but custom sizes. [1] luke, the eoma68 laptop li-ion cell is a non typical right? i know its a ebike battery cell but i assume theres no typical ebike li-ion cell dimensions? Why can’t we start cheap standard dimensions battery packs? I guess mass produced of the shelf is needed but what current company is going to start that? We have standard dimensions lithium cell sizes like the classic 18650 but devices want flat slim lipos :/. For large packs they need to be carefully balanced cells particularly when in parallel. So having mass produced battery boxes that users replace the cells in when the old cells die, i guess is not much good due to the unknowns in how much the cells match each other? Are there other solutions? Could we have enthusiast packs that are just in series with just 18650s in series for more Wh? upto hmm 6S? and for larger mah switch to more expensive 26650? would this be a in our power solution? would just diy people adapt it? or could products adapt it too? oww there is AA sized lithium cells too: 14500 maybe they could fit into designs of our little gadgets instead of flat lipo cells? if we really need small flat lipo cells, what would it take for a set of standard dimensions? What about large say 5Ah-20Ah sized cells and getting standardized battery packs? for all those large portable speakers or portable solar pods/battery power supply box products and ebikes,etc. Currently some use lead acid retro fit lithium packs but with balancing done internally by the bms, but how acceptingly is that?

Flash Debian and U-Boot to a PocketChip?

Perhaps this is better suited to a reply than a new topic, but I'm not aware of how to do that with messages in digest mode so... Back in July, Pablo claimed at http://lists.phcomp.co.uk/pipermail/arm-netbook/2017-July/014340.html that he had successfully managed to get Debian Stretch running from USB on the PocketChip. Could somebody explain to a novice (i.e. me) what the steps entailed to flash u-boot and then boot Stretch are? A description of how to flash the OS to NAND would be amazing, but even just a brief outline of Pablo's process would be great. Thanks (and sorry for my ignorance)! Regards, Grace Past
